Canada Day events will continue rain or shine, unless there’s lighting, Canadian Heritage says.
“If there’s lighting, we’ll stop everything to ensure the public’s safety,” said media relations representative Natalie Huneault.
For the day and evening of July 1, Environment Canada has been forecasting a chance of rain or thunderstorms.
“If there’s thunder, we will stop (Canada Day events) for a prolonged period of time,” said Huneault.
She said Canada Day in Ottawa is no stranger to rainy weather.
“Last year we had bad weather, so a performer had their two songs reduced for everyone’s safety,” said Huneault.
For Canada’s 150th, she said, organizers will do the same if they encounter rain.
“If it’s wet on stage we will cut performances short to make sure dancers don’t slip for public safety,” said Huneault, “If there’s rainy weather, we’ll wait it out.”
Huneault said a weather reporting service sends officials alerts whenever there is the possibility of rain.
“We will do our best to advise people and organizers about the weather,” said Huneault.
In case it does rain, people should bring a poncho and “a hand-held umbrella, so you’re not going to poke someone’s eye out,” said Huneault.
Out of all Canada Day venues, including Parliament Hill and Major’s Hill Park, only the Canadian Museum of History has some indoor events and activities.
