To mark the 150th birthday of Confederation, we asked local residents from a variety of backgrounds to share their wishes for the future of the capital and the country. Today: Sen. Kim Pate.
As all Canadians from coast to coast to coast look forward to celebrating the 150th anniversary of our country, I am reminded that it is vital for all of us to recognize that in Canada, we are all treaty peoples. The treaties that predate and followed Canada’s existence as a country should not be dusty documents on archive shelves but rather represent part of an ongoing process in need of renewal, a forging of relationships between nations that ought to be approached based on mutual understanding and respect.
Canada’s 150th anniversary is a chance to advance this relationship, develop trust and move forward together. Together, we should look forward to celebrating the rich culture of Indigenous Peoples, not just in this month or year, but into the future. Together, we celebrate opportunities to work, together, toward justice, fairness and reconciliation in order to end our country’s legacy of inequality and colonialism and benefit each and every one of us — individually and collectively. The prospect of such a future is well worth celebrating!
— Hon. Kim Pate is an Independent senator for Ontario and former executive director of the Canadian Association of Elizabeth Fry Societies. She has spent 35 years advocating for the rights of those who have been marginalized, victimized, criminalized, institutionalized and imprisoned.
