As were we growing up, in what used to be called Lower Town, I remember my learned and wise father reciting the words of Abraham Lincoln: “A man never stands so tall as when he stoops to help a small child.” This somehow became my life’s motto and with that thought, I ask the following questions.
What has Ottawa meant to me? I have, over my 84 years, seen this wonderful place grow to a world-class city that still has at its roots generosity, sharing and compassion for its citizens.
I am the product of a depression-era immigrant family. I know what it is like to scratch out the most meagre of livings and for that reason I have dedicated much of my life to giving back to this city that I call home and love so much.
What has Ottawa done? Ottawa has welcomed immigrants over the decades, it has shown tolerance and allowed people like me, a self-made man, the opportunity to grow and give back.
I remember when we celebrated the 100th anniversary of Confederation, and I can recall vividly when I was given the the great honour of catering the 125th anniversary celebration in Ottawa. Each celebration brought old and new Canadians alike into a community family. What a privilege it has been for me to be able to be a small part of this ever-changing and developing mosaic.
While others may reflect upon what they may have done for this community, I think back on the opportunities that our community has allowed me to share with it. For these opportunities I say, “thank you.”
Ottawa has been generous in bestowing honours upon me. These have only inspired me to do more for the city and community that I love. For me, the words “thank you” are not an end but the opportunity to continue to do more. So long as the Almighty gives me strength, I will always continue to strive. Thank you, Ottawa for providing me the privilege and honour to help wherever and whenever I can.
