In celebration of Canada’s 150th birthday, the Citizen is rolling out one fact each day for 150 days until July 1, highlighting the odd, the fascinating and the important bits of Ottawa history you might not know about.

As the Ottawa 67’s celebrate their 50th anniversary this season, two of their greats have been recognized on and off the ice as honoured members of the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto. Legendary GM/coach Brian Kilrea and ex-blueliner Denis Potvin, who won four Stanley Cups with the New York Islanders in 1980s, have both been recognized.

Kilrea went into the Hall of Fame in 2003 as a builder — around the time when he recorded his 1,000th career victory behind the 67’s bench. Known for his sparkling personality, Kilrea was elected not only because he sent numerous players to the NHL, but also because he helped shape the lives of many of those who played for him and taught them the benefits of hard work.

Potvin, an Ottawa native, was selected No. 1 overall in 1973 by the Islanders, and won the Norris Trophy as the league’s top defenceman three times. He retired with 310 goals and 1,052 points during his 15-year career and had 329 points in five years with the 67’s. Potvin’s induction ceremony into the Hockey Hall of Fame was held in Ottawa in 1991.
