Power outage closes the Rideau Centre and impacts surrounding area

A power outage closed the Rideau Centre and affected the area surrounding the Château Laurier and some vendors in the ByWard Market on Friday night.

Around 4:30 p.m., Hydro Ottawa tweeted that crews were responding to a power outage in Rideau-Vanier ward, affecting 736 customers.

Later, it tweeted that the outage affected Besserer Street, Daly Street and the intersection of Rideau and Elgin streets.

The Rideau Centre has been evacuated and closed for the night due to the outage.

OC Transpo also announced that its customer services centre at Rideau is closed for the rest of the day.

The Château Laurier also lost power, but one tweet Friday evening stated the power had been restored long before expected.

Hydro Ottawa, on social media, had said the cause is under investigation and that power was expected to be restored at 10 p.m.
