Two Gatineau men are facing criminal charges following an alleged act of vigilantism. Teenagers were caught stealing before being held against their will, with one forced to strip naked and walk along the road, police said.
In a news conference, Const. Andrée East announced that two men were arrested Wednesday and were charged with kidnapping, keeping someone against their will, sexual assault, breaking and entering and uttering threats.
Marc-Andre Essiambre, 37, and Claude Poitras, 39, appeared in court on Wednesday afternoon.
In the early hours of July 2, three teens under the age of 16 were attempting to steal money from parked cars in the Buckingham area of Gatineau. A man caught them in the act and the teens fled as the man approached them. However, a second man caught one of the fleeing teens.
One of the men grabbed one of the teens by the back of the neck and forced the teen into a car, said a police news release. The two men held the teen against the teen’s will and demanded the teen give them one of the addresses of the teen’s friend, who had run away. The teen responded to their demand. The two men and the teen drove to the address that was given.
Arriving at the address, one of the men got out of the car and entered the residence without permission. A second teen was in the residence alone and locked the room’s door. One of the men broke down the door and dragged the second teen out of the house by force, police said.
Once outside, the first man forced the second teen who had just exited the house to strip completely naked and walk down the street. One of the men drove in his car with the non-naked teen, following the other man and the naked teen who were walking along the side of the road. The first man forced the teen who was naked to walk through bushes, police said.
The naked teenager and the man walking with him made their way to the third teen’s residence and the man knocked on the door forcibly and let himself into the home without permission. The man was met by the third teenager’s parents and uttered threats and said he wished to leave with the three teens to “teach them a lesson,” said a police news release.
The man who was in the car with the other teen arrived at the residence and the parents of the third teen then convinced the two men to leave without the three teenagers.
The major crimes unit of the Gatineau police is investigating the matter. The three teens are being seen by psychologists and are receiving support, police said.
Essiambre was known to police and had drug- and substance-related charges laid against him last year.
Police urge the public not to take justice matters into their own hands and to call police if they are victim to or witness a crime being committed.
