A songbird from Western Canada that was rescued from freezing after it somehow strayed to Pakenham needs human assistance to fly home.

The Bullock’s oriole was rescued in January 2016 and taken to the Wild Bird Care Centre in Ottawa, and now the centre has put out a plea:

“We are sending our Bullock’s Oriole home out west and she needs a bird-lover to take her in the cabin of an Air Canada flight to Vancouver from Ottawa.

“Are you flying out to Vancouver? If yes, can you please take a songbird in a small carrier under the seat with you? An accredited wildlife rescue member will meet you in Vancouver to take the bird for acclimatization and release.”

A Bullock’s oriole is very similar to our local Baltimore oriole and the two can interbreed. DNA analysis showed this bird, a female, is a hybrid. It is native to southern Alberta or British Columbia, or to the western United States.

Birders found her eating wild apples in the snow in Pakenham, long after orioles from this area had flown south. When the weather turned colder, she nearly froze. A rescuer found her flapping one wing and going around in circles on the ground.

Volunteers are asked to send email to: sandra@wildbirdcarecentre.org.
