Uber drivers in Ottawa can now get tipped through the smartphone application.
The international ride-ordering company turned on the tipping option Monday for rides in the capital.
As Uber says, “Tipping is up to you; it’s completely optional, but always appreciated.”
The lack of a tipping option has irritated some local Uber drivers, even before the service became legal in Ottawa last year.
Still, one of the hallmarks of Uber was the absence of tipping. Customers didn’t have to worry about tipping when arriving at a destination — just open the door and go.
On the other hand, customers impressed with their Uber service had no way to give a little something extra to their drivers through the app.
Customers have 30 days after their rides to give drivers tips.
Uber says it doesn’t charge drivers additional service fees on tips.
Customers don’t need to worry about their ratings taking a hit over their stinginess. According to Uber, the tip information is attached to the trip, not the customer’s name.
Tipping is now available on all Uber rides in Canada and the U.S.
