The family of a 70-year-old bus driver who was seriously injured in a July 12 crash with a heavy truck carrying a crane in North Gower, has made the difficult decision to take the woman off life support.

A statement from the Brenda Rybiak, posted the Facebook page of Nepean-Carleton MPP Lisa Macleod, said the family made the decision to remove the elderly driver from life support on Monday.

“Thursday our family met with the doctors and mother’s chances recovery are not sustainable to any quality of life. We asked the doctors for the weekend to process what we know mother would want and what we would have to do . We are respecting mother’s wishes and will remove her from life support tomorrow and let her go,” reads the statement.

“With this process it can take a few days before mother passes. We ask that you continue to pray for our family during this very difficult time.”

Rybiak was critically injured when the bus she was driving collided with a truck transporting a crane at around 7:20 a.m. on July 12 near the intersection of Roger Stevens Drive and McCordick Road.

She was pinned under the crane as a result of the collision but was found conscious and breathing when first responders arrived.

Firefighters used a heavy rescue vehicle to stabilize the large rig.

Rybiak was freed from the wreckage around 7:40 a.m., and taken to the trauma centre with serious injuries to her head and chest. She was placed on life support after doctors were able to stabilize her condition.

The 47-year-old man driving the crane was taken by ambulance to hospital.

A 17-year-old girl who was riding on the bus was unhurt.
