In just over an hour, Sgt. Mark Gatien and his Ottawa police traffic unit were able to catch 22 drivers going over the 100-km/h speed limit on Highway 174 on Wednesday afternoon.
“I was surprised. We don’t get too many driving in the 140s,” Gatien said of one driver who was stopped on the highway around 12:30 p.m.
On top of a fine, that driver was also dinged $325 more for driving without a license.
According to the Highway Traffic Act, speeders going 30-49 km/h or more over the speed limit are charged $6 per kilometre. They’re also docked four demerit points.
Police regularly monitor highways to make sure drivers are staying within the speed limits.
Officers caught their fastest driver around 1:40 p.m. — a young man going about 155 km/h. He was charged with stunt driving and lost his licence and car for seven days.
