Kumo, the giant metal spider, awoke from the top of Notre Dame Cathedral on Sussex Drive on Thursday evening to kick off the highly anticipated La Machine. Hundreds of spectators went wild as the mechanical spider descended from the cathedral tower.
The event got off to a slow start but the crowd did not lose its excitement. Spectators cheered as Kumo’s operators were lifted into the sky by crane and descended in a spider-like way onto the machine to officially begin the event. As Kumo descending from the top of the cathedral tower, where it had been perched most of the day, a machine blew bubbles onto the excited spectators.
Myriam Norman, who arrived early to find a good spot to watch, had been looking forward to La Machine since first hearing about it months ago.

“I think it’s very unique. I saw the video and I thought it would be pretty awesome to come and see,” said Norman, 54, who lives in Barrhaven.
Norman plans to try to follow the performances of Kumo and Long Ma, the dragon, over the next couple of days but wanted to make a point of attending the Kumo’s awakening on Thursday evening. Norman said her family was travelling out of province.
“I have nieces and nephews who are vacationing in Prince Edward Island and they want video and pictures. They’re 13 and 12 and over-the-moon excited (for the event) and wishing they could be here.”

The giant machines — Long Ma, the horse-dragon, and Kumo, the spider — are astonishing, a combined 80 tonnes of clanking, articulated steel, escaping steam and window-rattling roars.
Kumo can stretch 20 meters long and 13 metres high and takes more than a dozen people to operate.
La Machine is a French street theatre company founded by François Delarozière, an engineer by training. Guy Laflamme, executive director of Ottawa 2017, described Delarozière as one of the most brilliant minds in France’s artistic world. Laflamme and the city have been planning La Machine’s four-day performance for more than two years.
La Machine will continues Friday, Saturday and Sunday. For more information on parking, road closures and the event schedule please click here or visit www.ottawa.ca.
