When Long Ma the dragon-horse tromped through the downtown area close to where David Kneebone works on Friday, he made a point not to even peek at the giant beast.
He was determined to see the monster for the first time with his family in the ByWard Market on Saturday morning.
“We wanted to see it all together as a family for the first time,” agreed Erin Kneebone, David’s wife.
Thousands of people arrived at least an hour before Kumo the spider and Long Ma the dragon-horse began their walkabout throughout the market. Long Ma slept in until shortly after 11 a.m. on George Street and blew mist onto spectators before starting his journey north on Dalhousie Street and the crowd followed.
The Kneebone family including their two children Emma, 11, and Lauren, 7, were filled with excitement as they waited patiently for Long Ma the dragon to awake. The family had been following La Machine over social media since Thursday and said that Saturday morning seemed like the perfect day to see it in person.

Lauren was the one who introduced the family to the event around February of this year after she took a school trip to Parliament and her local councillor explained to her class about La Machine.
“When she came home saying there was going to be a fire-breathing dragon walking around the streets of Ottawa – we didn’t understand,” said Kneebone.
“It’s so neat that its brought the people of Ottawa out and united us in something. It’s an opportunity to be a tourist in your own city – it even made us come see the changing of the guard this morning too.”
The father said that they were a little anxious to see the giant mechanical dragon start moving as he wasn’t sure how it would work with the giant crowd surrounding the creature.
However, it was not the spectators — largely held in check by police and volunteers — that hindered Long Ma’s walkabout. Instead, it appeared as though the beast’s head was briefly caught in a tree at the corner of Dalhousie and George streets.

Meanwhile, it wasn’t just the spectators who went slightly gaga over the parade of monsters.
First responders and others on Twitter were uncharacteristically light-hearted with their messages.
Please be advised that Dalhousie is currently closed due to an escalating Dragon VS Spider battle. #LaMachine

And from this traffic officer,
I have heard that at 1500hrs (ish) the spider is going to the Supreme Court to check on a stash there. (That may belong to Miss Dragon) pic.twitter.com/4i6dpgNShB
