Lt.-Col. John By, the man best known around here for building the Rideau Canal and founding what we now know as our capital, will be celebrated in Ottawa on Monday.
The day dedicated to the colonel is known elsewhere as the Civic Holiday, but most importantly, gives most Ottawans an extra day off.
In Quebec, it’s business as usual on Monday.
Retail, groceries and alcohol
Tanger Outlet’s, Place d’Orléans and St. Laurent will be open starting from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.
CF Rideau Centre will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Bayshore is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
ByWard Market businesses will be open all weekend.
As for groceries, Herb and Spice on Bank Street will be open from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Produce Depot on Carling Avenue and on Bank Street is open on the Holiday starting at 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Sobeys stores in Barrhaven, Trim and Innes and Kanata will all be open 24 hours. But Sobeys on Metcalfe will be open from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m.
Meanwhile, the Metro on Rideau will be open 24 hours and the grocery store’s location on Bank Street will be open starting from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The Loblaws on Isabella will be open from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. and the Loblaws on Robertson Road from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. The McArthur Avenue location is open 24 hours.
All Your Canadian Superstore’s will be open from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Monday.
Beer Store locations at College Square, Carling Avenue, Rideau Street and Montreal Road will be open on Monday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. However, the Scott Street store won’t be open. Check with your local store to see about holiday hours.
On Monday, all 460 LCBO locations across Ontario will be open. For store hours check the LCBO website.
City services, parking and transportation
Ottawa’s City Hall and Provincial Court will be closed holiday Monday.
The City’s 311 phone line will be open only for urgent matters. Persons with hearing related disabilities can call 613-580-2401.
The Sexual Health Centre, dental clinics, Well Baby Drop-in and Ottawa Public Health information line will all be closed.
All city parking regulations and restrictions will still apply on Monday.
OC Transpo will be operating Monday but on their Sunday schedule with extra service for routes 8, 94, 95 and 105. All OC Transpo customer service centres will be closed, except for the Rideau office which will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday. The transit information centre will be open from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Para Transpo will be on its holiday service schedule and regular Monday weekday bookings will automatically be cancelled. Customers can book trips for the holiday Monday by calling 613-244-7272.
Para Transpo customer service, administration and taxi coupon operations will be all be closed on Monday. Para Transpo reservations line will be open from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. While the trip cancellation and general inquiries office will be open from 6 a.m. to 12:30 a.m.
All Municipal child care centres and city summer camps are cancelled for Aug. 7.
Museums, cultural services and recreation
The Bytown Museum will be taking full advantage of the special day with costumed characters, interactive activities, entertainment and a Celtic cross ceremony starting at 2 p.m. The museum will be open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
The Canadian War Museum will be open from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. and the Canadian History Museum is open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Monday.
Meanwhile, the Canadian Museum of Nature will be open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The Canadian Museum of Agriculture and Aviation and Space will both be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Also the Bank of Canada Museum will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
All City of Ottawa archives, art centres, galleries, theatres and museums will be closed. Some exceptions may apply; check ottawa.ca or your facility to confirm.
At City Hall, the Karsh-Masson Gallery, the Barbara Ann Scott Gallery and the OAG Annex will be open.
Ottawa public libraries will be closed on Monday but regular hours will resume the following day.
All beaches, splash pads and some wading pools will be open, weather permitting.
Some outdoor pools, indoor pools and fitness centres will be open with modified schedules. Check ottawa.ca or your facility for more details.
Most registered programs at swimming pools, community centres and arenas will be cancelled but there may be some exceptions.
Public skating will be available at the Bob MacQuarrie, Jim Durrell and Goulbourn Recreation Complex. Check with ottawa.ca for details.
Garbage collection
There will be no curbside green bin, recycling and garbage collection on Monday. Instead, pickup will take place on Tuesday. The collection of recycling, garbage and green bins will be delayed by one day for the remainder of the week. For curbside collection enquiries, see the collection calendar tool.
There will be no multi-residential bulky items, green bin or recycling collection on Monday. Pickup for these items will be on Tuesday and recycling container and green bin collection will be delayed by one day for the rest of the week.
But, multi-residential garbage container collection is not delayed. Collection will take place on its regularly scheduled day during the week of Aug. 7.
The Trail Road Waste Facility will be closed on Monday.
