It’s the long weekend, and the weather forecast isn’t too terrible. It’s time to bust out and enjoy some of the capital city at its best, with a smattering of Canada 150 to make things even better. Here are some suggestions for things to see and do:
Ottawa International Buskerfest
Aug. 3 – 7, Sparks Street
Info: ottawabuskerfestival.com
Sparks Street is transformed into a promenade of street performers, with fire-breathers, contortionists, acrobats and comedy. Featuring a Circus School and a late-night adults-only show Sunday night.
Lac Leamy Sound of Light festival:
The 22nd Casino du Lac-Leamy Sound of Light festival kicks off Saturday and will feature fireworks synchronized through music on Saturday and Wednesday nights through Aug. 19. Fireworks fans can make a night of it outside the Canadian Museum of History, where activities begin at 6 p.m. and food and alcohol are available before the 9:15 p.m. show of explosions and sounds, which will be followed by an hour of music after the 10 p.m. finish. Tickets are $10 for adults, sold at the museum box office, online at historymuseum.ca/event/the-casino-du-lac-leamy-sound-of-light-22-edition/, or by phone at 819-776-7000. Online sales end at 6 p.m. on the day of the event, but the museum box office will still sell tickets.
Get up to speed on local road and pathway closures.
Capital BBQ Festival
Aug. 4 – 6, Carp Fairgrounds
Info: capitalbbqfest.ca / bbqfest@eatapedia.com
Got what it takes to grill with the greats? Bring your own BBQ and enter any of the contests, or just take in the festival sights, sounds, smells, and of course, tastes.
Swimming:
As of Saturday, all local beaches are good to go. Check out Ottawa Public Health’s water quality table.
Sunday BikeDays:
Explore the region on parkways closed to motorized vehicles on Sunday mornings. The NCC site has all the details.
Or try out some of Wayne Scanlan’s 5 must-try bike rides around Ottawa.
And, we’ve got more ideas at the links below.
