The province’s civilian police watchdog is probing a case where a fleeing vehicle rolled outside Smiths Falls after striking two police cruisers early Sunday.

Just after midnight, OPP and Smiths Falls police officers were called to a dispute. A man fled the scene in a vehicle when police arrived. Soon after, officers spotted his vehicle which then hit the two cruisers.

Shortly after that, the vehicle crashed on Highway 15 at Golf Club Road.

The driver, a 29-year-old man, was taken to the hospital. He suffered a number of lower-body fractures and head injuries, the SIU said.

The extent of his injuries wasn’t released but the SIU says it investigates incidents involving police where there has been serious injury in addition to a death or an allegation of sexual assault.

A team of six – three investigators, two forensic investigators, and a collision reconstructionist – were dispatched.

They ask that anyone with information call the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529.

Anyone who has video evidence related to the incident is asked to upload it through the SIU website at www.siu.on.ca.
