The latest initiative in the renewal of the ByWard Market was unveiled today when Mayor Jim Watson officially opened the Market’s first two year-round enclosed vending stands. He was joined by representatives of the ByWard Market BIA, and by Grant and Pam Hooker and Andrew Cullen, owners of BeaverTails Ottawa Inc.

The new Gateway Stands are located adjacent to the George Street Plaza and alongside the historic market building. They serve as a welcoming gateway to the many vendors and merchants along William Street and ByWard Market Street.

The Gateway Stands are occupied by Maple Country Sugar Bush and Maker House Company, providing premier and unique local products. The Gateway Stands also complement the renewed George Street Plaza, which opened in May, and represent a unique project to mark Canada’s 150th birthday.

The design, construction and installation of the Gateway Stands was sponsored by BeaverTails, Ottawa Inc., who were named today as the City’s newest Community Champion at the Leader level.

Quotes

“The ByWard Market is the city’s preeminent hub for both tourists and residents and the Gateway Stands will serve to enhance a vibrant and engaging ByWard Market area. I would like to extend my gratitude to Andy Cullen, Pam Hooker and Grant Hooker of BeaverTails Ottawa, for their leadership on this project. BeaverTails are unquestionably synonymous with Ottawa, and it is a pleasure partnering with such a great company.”

Mayor Jim Watson, City of Ottawa

“These stands are a great contribution to our city’s gem – the Byward Market. They will be welcoming Gateways to the many vendors and merchants along William and ByWard Market Streets. They will also serve residents and tourists who enter from George Street, and in the future from the O-Train Confederation Line’s Rideau Station.”

Mathieu Fleury, Councillor, Rideau Vanier

“We are excited about the installation of the market’s first year-round, enclosed vending stands and their impact on the overall revitalization of the ByWard Market. I’m pleased that the stands are being installed in time to recognize Canada’s 150th birthday.

Grant Hooker, co-owner, BeaverTails Ottawa Inc.
