Shannon MacPherson grew up in the city, but she was a country girl at heart.
“Her very first time hunting, she shot a deer the first day within the first hour, showing all the men around what she was made of,” said her mother, Suzanne Jansen.
On Monday morning, the 22-year-old was driving back to Ottawa from visiting a friend in White Lake when she was involved in a fatal, single-vehicle collision. Her car was found in a ditch an hour’s drive west of Ottawa on White Lake Road.
“She was always smiling and bubbly and loved to laugh. At the same time, she was a very considerate and level-headed young lady,” said Jansen in an email to the Citizen on Wednesday.
Her level-headedness is what led her to be selected for a youth policing initiative with the Ottawa police.
She hoped to pursue a career in policing and enrolled in Algonquin College’s police foundation course.
But after a year, she decided that that career wasn’t for her and pursued a diploma in office administration. She graduated in 2015.
Her friends said she was working in Nepean as a cleaner at a cleaning and housekeeping service called Molly Maid as she looked for a job in administration.
Her former fiancé and high school sweetheart, Thomas Burns, said she was the most kind, loving and generous person he had ever met.
“She donated blood regularly and adopted two cats,” said Burns.
Her mother said while MacPherson was out in the countryside last year, she rescued a cat at a hunting cabin. MacPherson named it Bucky.
She also rescued a polydactyl kitten at a flea market on Mother’s Day. She named the orange and white kitten Oliver.
Burns said he remembers MacPherson dreaming of one day owning a farm with “many animals.”
Although their relationship didn’t work out, Burns said they were still close.
“I’ll miss our long walks together to the Mayfair theatre and laughing with her, and waking up next to her. I’m going to miss my best friend.”
Visitations will be held at McEvoy-Shields Funeral Home on Saturday from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m.
A service is being held at the funeral home on Sunday at 2 p.m. Donations can be made to any charity in her memory, her family said.
