Students are back to school, but it doesn’t have to be all studying, tests and writing papers. Fun should also be on the agenda — and nothing says fun like a short weekend road trip to break up the school routine.

Here are a few outings worth the drive for under $65.

Camp Fortune’s zip line

It’s hard to think of anything more exhilarating than zipping through the colourful Gatineau trees this fall. Camp Fortune features challenging aerial courses and zip lines that will test your endurance and strength. Moderately-active individuals will be able to complete this outdoor activity with ease. There are several zip-lines throughout the course.

For reservations, call 819-827-5517 or email reservations@campfortune.com.

Drive: 30 minutes from Ottawa. $35 for visitors 18 and over.

Gazing at stalactites in the Bonnechere Caves.

Bonnechere Caves

Located along the Bonnechere River in Eganville, about an hour-and-a-half drive west of Ottawa, the caves offer insight into the impact of glaciers on our landscape and the process of fossilization. Privately operated for more than 55 years, this cave exploration tour is educational and fun for people of all ages. Guided tours leave every 20 to 30 minutes on the weekends and last around an hour. You may need to take a light sweater during fall tours.

Reservations are not required. $18 for adults.

Morrison’s Quarry

Given that hot weather often stretches well into the fall, swimming is not off the table in September and October. What better way to take the last outdoor dip of the year than in a natural swimming pool?

Morrison’s Quarry, a hidden gem with its emerald water and rocky cliffs, is 30 minutes outside of Ottawa in Chelsea, Que. Typically used for bungee jumping and scuba diving, the quarry is a great place to picnic and swim with friends.

$5 per person.

Nordik Spa-Nature

Just 15 minutes north on Highway 5 from downtown Ottawa, this oasis in the middle of the Gatineau Hills will melt away the pressures of academia. The Scandinavian retreat includes seven outdoor baths and an infinity pool, plus eight unique saunas, indoor and outdoor relaxation areas, and a restaurant and lounge with terraces.

$63 per person. Special treatments like a massage and the salt water floating Källa Treatment are extra.

Mont Ste. Marie mountain biking

Mont Ste. Marie boasts some of the best mountain biking in the region. Just one hour north of Ottawa in Lac-Sainte-Marie, Que., the mountain area offers a wide variety of trails, and acres of land. Trails have been developed around and on the hill with green options like the Hollywood Boulevard for beginners to black diamond-rated thrill rides like Hotel California. The main meeting point is the Velo MSM gazebo at the foot of the ski lodge.

Group rides tend to begin at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday. When the chairlift is running, it’s $22 for a day pass.
