The capital has seen some successful events over the summer for Canada 150. La Machine, MosaïCanada and Kontinuum, to name a few, have had glowing reviews. Inspiration Village, however, has been the source of controversy among the list of Ottawa2017 events.
Many found that Inspiration Village did not live up to its name and caused many business owners around the area problems. One thing that organizers and critics can agree on is how many people Inspiration Village, along with other Ottawa2017 events, drew to the ByWard Market.
Inspiration Village — the 41 shipping containers housing exhibits and demonstrations related to Canada’s provinces and territories, wrapped up on Monday. The Citizen caught up with some of its visitors for final thoughts about installation.

“The fact we can come to this city and experience this and it’s safe for families and safe for people — not many global environments have that. There’s a lot of cities that don’t have this opportunity and governments can’t afford to put these kinds of things (together.) Even within our own country there’s a lot of rural areas that don’t have this opportunity. … We as Canadians aren’t always aware of how many people envy what we have, and until you live elsewhere it’s hard to understand that envy.”

“It’s nice to see people outside even when there’s bad weather. It’s just really nice to see people outside enjoying time together rather than being inside. … It’s a pleasant atmosphere. I’m happy being here.”

“There’s always people who are going to critique an event. I think Canada 150 was huge in Ottawa, I heard about it so much and I don’t know that many people in Ottawa so if I’m hearing so much about it it had to be a success overall.”

“We heard on the news last night that they have kids’ activities and stuff like that, so we thought of bringing the kids. I actually didn’t expect to find this entertainment here, so we’re pretty amazed by this. Even for adults — I didn’t expect that, but it’s so much fun. We were just discussing the different provinces and what they’re famous for and I didn’t expect to see all of that (at Inspiration Village.) In my opinion it’s better than the dragon and the spider — it’s less crowded and there’s more variety.”

“It’s one of our last days here in Canada and we wanted to see a city here in Canada and our choice was Ottawa and, yeah, it’s pretty cool here. We are here just for five hours. We just walked across here and we saw (Inspiration Village) and we heard the (mariachi band) playing guitars so we thought ,’OK let’s walk through this.’ It’s pretty cool. We’ve seen lots of nice (exhibits) here and lots of inspiration. It’s a little bit sad because we’ve seen lots of inspiration here but we just have three days left so we can’t see all of the things we’ve seen in (the exhibits) in real life. We did the quiz of Ontario and we were pretty bad, but it was nice and we had fun.”

“Actually, I am inspired. I’m getting ideas — I’m running a marketing events management company and I’m always looking for creative ideas and different ways to do things. I’m actually envisioning rail cars in our town — on a smaller scale, of course — but how to incorporate them into some of the festivals that are in our town.”
