The Finance and Economic Development Committee today received an update on the Stage 2 Light Rail Transit project. As part of the Confederation Line extension, 2.5 kilometres of bus rapid transit between Bayshore and Moodie Station will be converted to light-rail transit. In response to community feedback, the light maintenance and storage facility will be located west of Moodie Drive, farther away from the neighbouring community. An additional extension to the Trillium Line further west to Limebank will be explored conditional upon identifying an alternative funding source.

The Committee also approved a cost avoidance strategy for the Confederation Line project. This change to the existing credit agreement with Rideau Transit Group will help the City avoid an estimated $134 million in additional interest costs.

The 2016 Business Improvement Area Annual Report was received by Committee, profiling the achievements of 16 Business Improvement Areas in Ottawa. Thousands of visitors and attendees came to Ottawa for events in communities and commercial districts across the city.

Chinatown may soon be home to 24 new apartment rental units after the Committee approved a Brownfield Rehabilitation Grant up to $105,524 for 160, 164, 168, and 170 Cambridge Street North. The estimated economic impact is more than $4.2 million in direct construction value for the three-storey building. As a result of this development, more than $6 million would be added to the property tax assessment roll.

The Committee approved a report related to the technical requirements needed to establish the Rideau Carleton Raceway as the gaming site for the City of Ottawa. Once approved by Council, Hard Rock Ottawa will take over operations of the Rideau Carleton Raceway in mid-September 2017. These regulatory requirements involve seeking public input, and City Council formally establishing the Rideau Carleton Raceway at 4837 Albion Road, as a site for gaming. Residents can provide comments until September 13.

Items approved at today’s Finance and Economic Development Committee meeting will be considered by City Council on Wednesday, September 13, 2017.
