Firefighters raced against the clock on Wednesday, but this time only personal bests, not lives, were at stake.

The national Scott FireFit Championships, in Ottawa for the first time, are designed to be a test of firefighters’ real-world skills and strength.

More than 500 competitors, including about 16 from the national capital region, are competing at the Canadian Aviation and Space Museum from Wednesday through Sunday.

Firefighters are pushed to the limit as they navigate a gruelling course that culminates with competitors dragging a man-sized dummy to safety.

“The average person loses anything between two and five pounds during a race,” Denis Charbonneau, an Orléans-based firefighter and event organizer, told the Citizen this week.

Spectators are welcomed and admission is free.
