Police are advising drivers not to put all of their faith in GPS systems after a 22-year-old Woodstock man was arrested Thursday after blindly following his machine’s instructions in the wrong direction on busy Highway 401.
At about 8:30 p.m., the OPP received several calls for a driver travelling westbound in the highway’s eastbound lanes near Mallorytown, about 135 kilometres from Ottawa.
Patrol cruisers managed to flag him down quickly without incident.
“Travellers should not rely solely on technology such as GPS for navigation. The danger of being lulled into a false sense of security is a concern. We’re asking for caution, common sense and safety.” said Leeds OPP Acting Sgt. Josh Kingsley in a release.
The driver was charged with driving the wrong way in one-way traffic under the Highway Act and failing to have an insurance card.
