Firefighters launched a rescue boat to reunite a dog and owner late Tuesday morning after the animal got caught in the current of the Ottawa River.

The dog, which looked like a Labrador retriever, was about 50 feet offshore when it was able to climb onto a bridge abutment at Lemieux Island that couldn’t be accessed on foot.

Firefighters, who feared the owner would plunge into the water to rescue her pet, warned bystanders to get out of the water for their own safety.

After the story’s happy ending, the service reminded dog owners to leash pets and to stay out of the water.

Lemieux Island is in the middle of the Ottawa River near Parkdale Avenue and the Sir John A Macdonald Parkway.
