A Sunday weather forecast calling for a high of 29 C with a humidex of 35 has prompted Army Run organizers to issue a warning that cancellation is a possibility if temperatures pose a serious safety risk.

“We are receiving lots of questions about the heat this weekend. We are working on how we can best address and will be sending more information throughout the day,” said a statement from the race director posted on the Army Run Facebook page.

“We are still hoping for a change in the weather and that temperatures will stay moderate enough for a safe event. We have also put the message out to the community to have hoses and sprinklers out along the race courses.”

However, a cancellation is possible, and race organizers will make a decision after discussing the situation with the medical team and Emergency Services, said the statement. Updates will be posed on social media.

“All participants should familiarize themselves with the Emergency Alert System (EAS) prior to the race and remain alert for directions from race officials and take precautions to properly prepare for varying conditions on race day. We are very hopeful that the races will go on, but it will also be hotter than we would like and runners will need to be prepared.”

This year’s Army Run includes 5K, 10K and half marathons, as well as the Vimy Challenge, (5K + 10K).

Run organizers urged participants to wear lightweight, light-coloured clothing; increase fluid intake; when passing a water station, take one cup of water to drink and another to pour over their head to cool down; and ask family and friends who are watching along the course to bring ice-cold water or sports drinks.

“We hope that the weather will co-operate. Our priority is for everyone to have a safe and enjoyable weekend of running.”
