Hey, people – leave that moose alone.

The OPP reports that efforts to guide a bull moose, which was ultimately euthanized, out of a Petawawa residential neighbourhood “were hampered” Monday when people gathered in the area to take pictures.

That can cause “undue stress” to the animal and create traffic hazards as people park and cross roadways, said the Upper Ottawa Valley detachment, which “urges members of the public to leave wild animals alone.”

Spotting a moose or another create “can be a novelty” but people should instead move on and call the OPP and Ministry of Natural Resources if there’s a risk to public safety, the OPP said.

OPP and MNR conservation officers responded after the moose was reported wandering the Limestone subdivision at about 8:30 a.m. Monday

Over the course of the morning, the animal crossed Petawawa Boulevard where it appeared to become “distressed, exhausted and overheated.” Town firefighters pitched in, trying to cool the animal down with water.

Efforts to direct the moose out of the residential area failed.

Shortly after noon, the animal was “dispatched” by police when it charged a conservation officer near the intersection of Bedard Boulevard and Nick Street.
