The partners trying to develop an old school on Richmond Road into a francophone community centre and an adult high school have invited the neighbours for a picnic on Saturday.

The event hosted by the Maison de la francophonie d’Ottawa and the French public school board will include lunch and activities for the children.

It will also be a chance for neighbours to get more information about the project, which has experienced years of delays and rising costs.

A non-profit group has been trying to convert the old Grant School into a community centre for francophones for nearly a decade. The building, near the intersection of Carling Avenue, is now boarded up.

The city of Ottawa bought the school, which had been declared surplus, in 2008 and later turned it over to the non-profit group. The province contributed $4.26 million for the project, but construction was halted after the group encountered unexpected structural problems with the building and ran out of money.

The latest plan is for the French public school board to take ownership of the building, use some of the space for an adult high school, and lease the rest for francophone community groups and services.

The picnic

When & where: Saturday, Sept. 23 at the school, 2720 Richmond Rd., from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Includes: Free lunch, creation of a collective artwork, activity zone for kids
