The Executive of the Canada-China Friendship Society has recently approved a multi-year Canada-Chinese film project, with the goal of using cinema to broaden and deepen the CCFSO’s capacity to help Canadian learn about China and understand it better.
We are starting with a three films, and plan to grow the annual Canada – China Film Festival into a more significant event to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Canada-China Diplomatic Relations in 2020. The films chosen for this first year of the film festival provide telling and deeply moving stories of life and events over the last 150 years in China and Canada. Two of the films have Canadian Directors.
The launch of the film project on Friday September 22 will be at the Canadian Museum of Nature with a catered reception, a few speeches to celebrate the launch and the screening of Soul Mate by Canadian-Chinese Director Derek Tsang. Derek, who studied at Ryerson, is lauded as one of the brightest young film makers in the Hong Kong film industry.
The film is set in the current time period and explores the relationship between two young girls as they mature and discover the meaning of adulthood. The two stars both won Best Actress Awards for their roles in Soul Mate This film is still theatres in Canada and the US and our screening will be the Ottawa Premiere. Earlier this year Soul Mate was the opening film at the Reel Asian Film Festival in Toronto.
The following day, Saturday September 23, we will screen two films. In recognition of Canada’s 150 anniversary, the first film will be the docu-drama From C to C: Chinese Canadian Stories of Migration. This film addresses, among other things, racial discrimination against Chinese immigrants, the imposition and consequences of Canada’s Head Tax and Chinese Exclusion Act and the struggle for equality and reconciliation. It covers a time span from the late 1800’s to the recent past. The Director is Jordan Paterson.
The 2nd film on Saturday is Coming Home by Yimou Zhang, one of China’s leading Directors. It stars Gong Li, one of China’s most acclaimed actresses. This film had its Canadian premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. Coming Home is set in the Cultural Revolution (early 1970s) and follows a family, through this tumultuous period including the betrayal of the father by his daughter, his exile and eventual return and reconciliation.
