Family, friends and University of Ottawa Gee-Gees teammates are mourning the death of a talented football player on Sunday.
Loic Kayembe, 24, the Gee-Gees’ starting defensive end, died in his sleep early Sunday morning, according to a press release from the university on Monday.
The six-foot-one, 255-pound Kayembe was in his third year with the team and was a student in the Faculty of Social Science.
“Loic brought energy and joy to the game and to his teammates. He was a core member of a tightly knit defensive unit, many of whom are from Montreal and were football teammates together at Montmorency College. The entire Gee-Gees team is deeply affected by this loss,” the university said.
The school said family and teammates have asked for privacy.
A special commemoration for Kayembe will take place before Saturday’s Panda Game against the Carleton Ravens at TD Place.
