The City introduced new guidelines for planting trees in subdivisions. Born of the City’s initiative for Building Better and Smarter Suburbs, the new guidelines offer flexibility to the 2005 Clay Soils Policy. It will be easier for developers to plant larger and more diverse trees in sensitive marine clay soils under certain conditions, leading to more tree-lined streets in new subdivisions.
Under the 2005 policy, many new subdivisions either had a handful of small trees or, in some cases, no trees at all. Building on the Urban Forest Management Plan to increase Ottawa’s urban forest canopy, the new guidelines include some exceptions to increase the number of medium-sized trees.
Trees make our communities more sustainable and attractive – they also provide many environmental benefits. They absorb stormwater runoff, improve air quality, increase energy conservation and reduce the heat island effect. Bringing more trees to the suburbs will help make Ottawa a healthier and more attractive place to live.
