A 36-year-old Trenton man is facing charges including pretending to be a member of the Canadian Forces – apparently right down to the uniform – after allegedly stealing thousands from a woman he met online.
Napanee OPP officers responded to a report of a theft in Loyalist Township on Sept. 22.
The woman reportedly met the man on a dating site. He befriended the “unsuspecting victim” and within a month had moved into her home and began stealing money from her, police allege.
James Genereaux is charged with personating a peace officer, personating a peace officer while using a uniform, three counts of theft under $5,000, two counts of theft over $5,000 and failing to comply with a recognizance of bail.
It’s a crime for someone to falsely represent themselves as a peace or public officer or to use “a badge or article of uniform or equipment in a manner that is likely to cause persons to believe” that they are one.
Genereaux was held in custody for a bail hearing and appears in court in Napanee Oct. 3.
