A pleasure boat that sank at the Tall Ships marina on Thursday was the target of a deliberate act of sabotage.

But don’t expect the police to be trolling the aquatic underworld anytime soon.

“I think a muskrat is actually guilty,” Brockville Fire Chief Ghislain Pigeon said Friday morning,

Brockville firefighters, police officers and other officials were kept busy much of Thursday trying to pull the sunken 35-foot Doral boat out of the St. Lawrence River.

No one was injured in the incident and police confirmed Friday no criminal act is suspected.

“There was a failure of the exhaust system and that’s where the water was entering the boat,” said the fire chief.

Firefighters got the call at 9:34 a.m. and found the craft on its side on the river bottom, with only a portion of the arch sticking out, said Pigeon.

Coast Guard officers, Hurst Marine employees and workers from federal and provincial ministries were also kept busy in the incident at the Tall Ships Landing marina, where the vessel could be seen on its side late in the afternoon.

Once all the equipment was in place, “it probably took five hours to take it out,” said the fire chief.

A large-load Hurst truck was parked by the Ernie Fox Quay to transport the vessel.

The conclusion was that a muskrat chewed out the gaskets between between the exhaust system and the hull, he added.

“Apparently, that’s a common occurrence.”
