Mayor Jim Watson and Councillor Mathieu Fleury announced today that a new public space is being created in the ByWard Market. The York Street Plaza will be the new home of the iconic OTTAWA sign and a gathering place for visitors to the area.
The York Street Plaza occupies a small portion of the York Street parking block, at the west end near the York Street fountain. As a pilot project, it will be a temporary public space that will evolve in response to community feedback. The decision to move the OTTAWA sign to this space came as a result of feedback from the local business community and the ByWard Market Business Improvement Area that they wish to keep the attraction in the market.
The City is seeking out partnerships with community and business stakeholders for programming to animate the plaza and create a welcoming place for residents and tourists alike to enjoy within the ByWard Market.
Construction will be completed later this fall, including:
The City is set to create a master plan for public space within the broader ByWard Market area in 2018. This master plan will recommend improvements to traffic circulation, parking, business loading and the use of public space. The City will engage a wide range of community and business stakeholders to help develop a compelling vision for the entire ByWard Market.

Construction will be completed later this fall, including:
- The OTTAWA sign that visitors to the Market enjoyed during Ottawa 2017 festivities;
- An approximate 450 m2 asphalt plaza that will provide a clean backdrop for the OTTAWA sign and any future temporary art installations;
- A separation from the roadway made up of pre-cast concrete curbs and planters;
- A power supply and moveable seating, ensuring a flexible space to accommodate small-scale pop-up events on the plaza; and
- Two new pedestrian crossings across York Street with a wayfinding corridor in between that will safely link the two NCC courtyards (Jeanne d’Arc Court and Clarendon Lane).
