On October 1, 2017, members of the clergy from St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Ottawa, and the Roman Catholic and Anglican Dioceses of Ottawa reinterred the individuals from Barrack Hill Cemetery who were uncovered during construction for the Confederation Line LRT at a private service at Beechwood Cemetery. Seventy-eight individuals from the Barrack Hill Cemetery were previously reinterred at Beechwood Cemetery on September 25, 2017.
The individuals comprised some of Bytown’s earliest residents and were buried at Barrack Hill Cemetery from ca. 1827 to ca. 1845. Through the support and generosity of Beechwood Cemetery, a minimum number of 79 early settlers of Bytown, who helped shape the City of Ottawa, were honoured for their contributions and sacrifices during a respectful and dignified burial.
The final casket was recessed out of the Sacred Space, Beechwood Cemetery, where it was carried to the gravesite in a 19th century horse-drawn hearse, an archival item provided by the Cumberland Village Heritage Museum, where it was reinterred with a private prayer at the gravesite, joining the 51 other caskets that were reinterred earlier this week. It is expected that additional Barrack Hill Cemetery burials will be found as two sites are undergoing excavation this year. These remains will be reinterred following protocol.
