One person is dead as the result of a fire on Elke Drive in Barrhaven on Sunday.
According to firefighters, a home security monitoring business contacted emergency responders on behalf of an occupant around 4:15 p.m. When firefighters arrived at 43 Elke Dr. at around 4:20, they found heavy smoke on the home’s first floor and rushed to begin battling the blaze.
Emergency crews extinguished the fire by 4:56 pm. One of the home’s occupants was declared dead. No further details about that individual have been released.
Two firefighters needed medical attention at the scene, one for a lacerated hand and the second for burns to their ear. It was expected they would be taken to hospital for further treatment.
An investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing.
