Emergency personnel and hydro crews were scrambling Sunday evening after high winds swept through the area, knocking down tree limbs and power lines and causing a blackout for more than 10,000 customers in Kanata.
Hydro Ottawa confirmed the outage around 6:30, saying affected Kanata residents might not have power restored until after midnight. Several other areas of the region were also affected, with 1,200 homes reported without power in Rideau-Goulbourn and Kanata South and other sporadic outages reported in the Knoxdale-Merivale and Somerset areas.
Environment Canada issued a wind warning on Sunday afternoon after a cold front pushed into the region. The national weather watcher said winds could hit 100 km/h, causing damage to roof shingles, windows and buildings.
