No dress rehearsal, this is our life.
The outpouring of tributes from Canadians began the instant that news broke Wednesday morning that iconic Tragically Hip frontman Gord Downie had died of brain cancer at 53.
The news wasn’t unexpected – Downie had announced in May 2016 that he had incurable glioblastoma – but social media users expressed their shock and hailed him for being a poetic voice of Canada and for using the limelight to promote reconciliation with indigenous people.
Outlets including Rolling Stone instantly tweeted the news.
“Let’s cherish the love our community and country had for Gord Downie,” tweeted Coun. Jeff Leiper. “We’ll cry again, and then work to build the world he’d want us to.”

I think I speak for all people in Ontario in saying we are heartbroken. With Gord Downie's passing a piece of Canada has died.
