The City of Ottawa recognized 28 different projects across five categories at its Urban Design Awards on October 17, 2017.
Awards of Excellence were handed out in four categories:
The National Arts Centre Rejuvenation won the Award of Excellence for the Urban Infill category. It was recognized for its streetscape beautification, its warm and inviting design elements and airy public spaces.
The Jury also created a Special Jury Prize for Tall Building Design Excellence in the Infill category recognizing The Rideau at Lansdowne was recognized for its level of design and detailing which was an exemplar for other tall buildings to follow. The building fits well with both the Rideau Canal and a large public space, Lansdowne Park.
The Bank of Canada Renewal captured the Award of Excellence in the Public Places and Civic Spaces field. The project adds complex geometry on site while creating a new public space in the downtown core.
The Urban Renewal of the North Perimeter Wall on Parliament was recognized in the Urban elements category. As the Jury described it, this is a project of national significance that shows design doesn’t need to be avant-garde to express a pride of place. This project goes beyond urban elements and becomes a transformative public place, reinforcing one of the most important walks in the City, around parliament on the escarpment.
The final Award of Excellence was handed out in the Student category. Justin Spec, a student in the School of Architecture at McGill University was acknowledged for his Inter-City Bus Terminal Redevelopment design and its creative use of space.
While, there were no Awards of Excellence handed out in the Vision and Master Plans category, three awards of merit were handed out.
All Award of Excellence winners will represent Ottawa in competition for the 2018 Royal Architectural Institute of Canada’s Urban Design Awards program.
