A 20-year-old man once accused of a gunpoint home invasion in Toronto is now wanted for murder in a brazen daylight homicide on Caldwell Avenue, the Citizen has learned.
Ottawa homicide detectives have charged 20-year-old Farah Handule, of Toronto, with second-degree murder in the fatal shooting of 20-year-old Hamzeh Serhan on Sept. 20.
Handule’s whereabouts are currently unknown and he’s believed to be on the run. A warrant has been issued for his arrest.
Serhan was shot multiple times in the middle of the afternoon out front of Unit 30 at 1500 Caldwell Ave., an Ottawa Community Housing property.
Homicide victim Hamzeh Serhan was gunned down on Caldwell Avenue on Wednesday, Sept. 21, 2017.
Witnesses described the scene of the shooting as a quick encounter among many people that sent multiple young men fleeing, including the man believed to be the gunman, and mothers running to find their nearby children.
Serhan had no vital signs when police and paramedics arrived on the scene. Attempts were made to revive him, but he was pronounced dead at the Civic.
His friends described him as a smart young man and an all-around athlete with dreams of becoming a surgeon, who turned to selling drugs to make money. Serhan was known to anti-gang police who had arrested him for drug charges last year. Those charges were withdrawn before he was killed.
Several witnesses told the Citizen that Serhan’s killer was dressed in a grey hoodie and fled the area on foot.
Farah Handule, 20 of Toronto, is wanted on the charge of second degree murder of Hamzeh Serhan.
Handule is described as six-foot-one, 150 pounds with a dark complexion. Police said he is considered dangerous, and warn he may be armed.
Anyone with information regarding this homicide is asked to call the Ottawa Police Major Crime Section at 613-236-1222, ext. 5493. Anonymous tips can be submitted by calling Crime Stoppers toll-free at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS), or by downloading the Ottawa Police app.
Handule was charged in a home invasion in Toronto in March 2016, but had those charges withdrawn just eight months later before ever going to trial. A judge found there was no reasonable belief that either he or his co-accused could be convicted by a jury.
Central to the collapse of that case was a lack of identification evidence. Following a preliminary hearing for the charges — robbery with a firearm and possession of stolen property — Handule was not committed for trial and had the charges against him withdrawn.
Toronto police alleged Handule and two others, brandishing guns, confronted a man smoking a cigarette outside of the man’s home on Shoreham Court. The group allegedly demanded $110 and stole six containers of chocolate milk and a Samsung phone from the home.
When one of the assailants went upstairs to look for jewellery, the man and woman who lived at the home ran outside to find help. The intruders then fled to a nearby unit in the same housing complex.
Eleven people who left that second unit were arrested early the next morning, including Handule. One of the people in the group, a young offender, admitted to being a part of the robbery.
Though the home invasion was captured on surveillance video, there were gaps in both video footage and police surveillance of the unit the invaders fled into. The case against Handule was one of identification, and in November 2016 a judge ruled there was not enough evidence that could identify him as one of the culprits.
Handule is also wanted on at least two other warrants — a bench warrant in Milton for a charge of assaulting a peace officer and a bench warrant in Vaughan for a robbery charge.
