Carleton doctoral student Maude Marquis-Bissonnette says one reason she entered municipal politics was to see how things happened from the inside.

On Saturday, the 29-year-old mother of a four-year-old boy discovered things can take strange turns in politics when she was acclaimed councillor in Gatineau’s Plateau district, eight days before the Nov. 5 election.

Marquis-Bissonnette’s only opponent, Patrick Doyon, withdrew from the race Friday after media reports of alleged “inappropriate behaviour” towards women who worked with him over the past 15 years.

Radio-Canada aired allegations of “inappropriate” kissing and other actions by Doyon.

Doyon denied the allegations, but pulled his name from the ballot after discussions with his campaign and family.

Marquis-Bissonnette is a consultant in administration and public policy with a master’s degree in urban management from the Université du Québec à Montréal’s l’École nationale d’administration publique.

She is also on the board of the Association of Immigrant Women of the Outaouais (AFIO).

Marquis-Bissonnette is also the first official council of the Action Gatineau party created by sitting mayor Maxime Pedneaud-Jobin’s organization.

She was not immediately available for comment.
