There were no distractions for Dan Stoddard when he took the court for his first home game with the Algonquin College men’s basketball team on Saturday night.

Stoddard has become a local sports celebrity and his family was in the crowd, but he was all business at tipoff.

“I think it’s a little different when you’re a little younger,” Stoddard said on Sunday. “The nerves didn’t set in. I think I got my nerves out of me after the first exhibition game.”

His parents never saw him play in high school, so the game against Durham College was especially meaningful.

However, the next day, Stoddard was more interested in talking about the game, the team’s high number of turnovers and his growth as a player.

“It was a good game. I’m not complaining. I have a long way to go from where I want to be,” he said.

“I’m not looking for stats. I just want to make a difference when I get out there.”

Stoddard collected eight points and nine rebounds in 17:30 minutes on the court.

But more important for Stoddard, Algonquin beat Durham 90-80, notching the team’s first win of the season after losing the first two games on the road.

Stoddard, who was in the middle taking a test online Sunday afternoon, said the attention has been overwhelming since the Citizen first wrote about his hoop dreams.

On top of juggling his family life, college studies, work at OC Transpo and his exercise regimen — not to mention the renovations that are needed on his house — he’s been trying to manage public relations.

There have been calls and emails from the U.S., India and Switzerland from people wanting to talk to the 38-year-old college basketball player. Even Sports Illustrated picked up the story.

“It blew up far larger than I thought it was going to,” Stoddard said, happy that people are finding inspiration in his story.

Before going back to his test, he yawned while reflecting on all the demands in his life.

“I don’t know how I’m doing it,” he said. “I have no clue.”
