After a brief pause, which allowed some development to happen at its flagship location, the Nordik Group is finally forging ahead with its plans for a Scandinavian Spa in Whitby, Ont.
The company, which owns the massively popular Nordik Spa-Nature in Chelsea, Que., said the Whitby spa will be open as early as summer 2019. This is the second time the company has announced its intentions to build in Whitby. Initially, the firm revealed its plans for the city in June 2013, however, some issues getting the necessary approvals and an opportunity to build in Winnipeg forced a delay.
The company plans to begin construction on the new Whitby facility early next year. When it’s completed, the Whitby spa will be the company’s third location. It opened a second spa in Winnipeg called Thermëa in 2015.
The company’s co-founder and chief executive Martin Paquette said the move to open in Whitby marks a major milestone for the business, which first opened its Chelsea location in 2005. Paquette said that spa is now fully paid for, which has freed up financing so the firm can focus on opening other locations.
“We’re not just a spa company anymore,” he said. “We are a spa developer. We have a goal to open 10 spas over the next 10 years.”
Paquette said the Nordik Group has brought on architects, construction experts, accountants, administrative staff and it now has its own marketing department. The company employs more than 475 people, with more than 60 of those working at its new Chelsea corporate head office, located on the same property as Nordik Spa-Nature. More than $36 million has been spent on that property already, with another $10 million being spent on a new, on-site, 60-room hotel.
The hotel is expected to be 4,000 square metres, with a roofline that will fall in line with existing buildings on the property. The spa, as it exists now, provides rental accommodations through a number of cabins, but it wasn’t enough to keep up with demand, Paquette said.
Paquette said the hotel was always part of the company’s long-term plan. He said when the spa was first incorporated 15 years ago, it was considered an “Inn and Spa.” Recent multi-million dollar infrastructure improvements by the municipality into Chelsea’s water and sewage system made the hotel plan more feasible, he said.
The Whitby location is planned for the former Cullen Gardens and Miniature Village site. It’s estimated the new location will be able to accommodate 700 visitors at any one time. Construction on the new facility is expected to create as many as 200 new jobs in the area.
Paquette said as the company continues to look ahead, it may become less of a spa owner and more of a spa operator. He said the company is examining the business models of high-end hotel chains, such as Fairmont and Hilton, which do not own many of the properties with which their names are associated. Many big brand hotels are owned by a silent owner and operated as a specific brand such as Fairmont.
He said the company is already seeking a location for its fourth Nordik spa. Paquette said the company isn’t limited to locations in Canada and has been actively looking at U.S. cities where a Scandinavian retreat may be welcome.
