Before Basil Borutski was arrested near Kinburn, an Ottawa police tactical squad first had to clear the bush of a group of elementary schoolchildren on a field trip.

Ottawa Police Service Const. Dan Thompson was the first of those tactical officers to testify Monday at Borutski’s triple-murder trial.

The morning after his arrest, Borutski admitted in a police interview to killing Carol Culleton, 66, Anastasia Kuzyk, 36, and Nathalie Warmerdam, 48, in a Sept. 22, 2015 rampage through Renfrew County.

Police had tracked Borutski to a field in rural west Ottawa that afternoon, where the heavily armed tactical unit descended on the woods as an OPP helicopter and OPS Cesna aircraft circled overhead.

Thompson told the jury the tactical unit was alerted to the Renfrew County homicides just after noon, and were originally tasked with guarding an address on Metcalfe Street.

There were fears the suspect was headed to Ottawa, and Thompson testified there was concern “the individual was going to access someone on Metcalfe Street and cause some harm.”

Minutes later, the tactical team was speeding in an unmarked police pickup truck to the intersection of Becks Road and Kinburn, where the suspect had been spotted in a field.

“I knew we were going up against a potentially dangerous person,” said Thompson as tactical team members donned extra body armour and prepared their C8 carbine rifles.

Thompson was first deployed as a sniper, until concerns turned to Stonecrest Elementary School, several hundred metres away.

“The concern was there could be more potential victims,” said Thomspon, who was deployed as a “blocking force, so no one could bring any violence to the school.”

Once on the grounds of Stonecrest elementary, police learned of a group of young schoolchildren and teachers “checking out plants” in the bush behind the school — several hundred metres from the scene of the eventual police takedown.

Two officers found the school group and escorted them back inside, where the school was already under lockdown.

Shortly after 2 p.m., the police helicopter spotted Borutski standing in a field, and the tactical squad moved in, trekking through the brush until they spotted the suspect about 250 metres away.

Two other officers flanked the suspect in a formation Thompson called an “L-ambush” and began shouting instructions.

As he got closer, Thomson described the white male with a nearly shaved head and goatee fiddling with a plastic bag and taking swigs from a bottle, “regardless of the commands we were giving him.”

After Borutski was taken into custody and turned over to the OPP, police seized the Motorola cellphone, which would later reveal a lengthy text message exchange between Borutski and Carol Culleton in the days leading to her death.

That exchange, including Borutski’s raging response to Culleton apparently breaking off their relationship two days before she was killed, was entered into evidence last week.

The jury had previously heard of Borutski’s prior domestic-related criminal convictions against both Kuzyk and Warmerdam.

Nathalie Warmerdam.

Warmerdam’s daughter Valerie, who has periodically attended proceedings, was ushered out of court by Crown attorney Jeffery Richardson on Monday, while fellow Crown Julie Scott showed the jury graphic crime scene photos of the interior of the Warmerdam home.

Warmerdam was found dead at the base of the stairs, still wearing her housecoat, her half-eaten breakfast still on the dining room table next to her open laptop.

A pair of broken reading glasses was found nearby. A spent Winchester 12-gauge shotgun shell was near a doorway.

Forensic investigators identified two items of interest in Warmerdam’s bedroom.

OPP Const. Andrew Doherty testified police found a “domestic violence panic alarm” on her bed, right next to her pillow.

Under the bed, still in its bag, was a shotgun.
