Safer Roads Ottawa worked with community associations and stakeholders to increase road safety for children, pedestrians and cyclists, according to an update received today by the City’s Transportation Committee.
Safer Roads Ottawa partnered with local start-up SmartCone Inc. on a cyclist-detection system at the corner of O’Connor and Waverley streets. The system detects cyclists as they approach the intersection and activates LED lighting to alert motorists. Following the 30-day pilot, Safer Roads Ottawa will determine whether to use this system in other locations.
This past summer, Safer Roads Ottawa funded the purchase of a second digital license plate scanner for the Ottawa Police Service. Since August 2016, the scanner has detected nearly 200 suspended drivers and helped issue approximately $600,000 in fines.
To encourage cyclists to stay behind the bumpers of large vehicles, Safer Roads Ottawa, in partnership with OC Transpo and the Share the Road Cycling Coalition, provided more than 1,000 ‘Stay Safe, Stay Back’ decals to be added to the City’s fleet this fall. This is the first time a public transportation service has participated in the campaign.
The 50 km per hour speed limit on Sussex Drive could soon be extended from Boteler Street to Rideau Gate. The speed limit between Boteler Street and Rideau Street is already 50 km per hour, while the speed limit from Boteler Street to Rideau Gate is currently 60 km per hour. Extending the lower speed limit would provide a consistent speed limit along the corridor.
The Committee also received the 2016 annual report for the City’s parking services. Last year saw significant upgrades and repairs to the ByWard Market parking garage. In addition to upgrading the garage’s fire alarm and electrical systems, the City repaired concrete, replaced asphalt and improved the foundation wall. The garage reopened in June 2016.
Starting in the 2015-2016 winter, the City began offering free overnight parking in municipal parking garages during overnight parking bans. Approximately 1,600 residents took advantage last winter, and the City will continue to offer free parking during overnight parking bans in the coming winter.
Items approved at today’s Transportation Committee will go to City Council on Wednesday, November 8.
