Ontario’s police watchdog, the Special Investigations Unit, has ruled there are no reasonable grounds to lay charges against an Ontario Provincial Police officer after a 35-year-old man and a four-year-old child were injured in a 2016 single-vehicle crash in Pembroke.
In the nearly morning of April 17, 2016, the child was taken by her father from her home in Aurora, north of Toronto. Police said the man was spotted driving his 2008 silver Toyota Sienna near Pembroke and a chase ensued. Police said it was broken off after the vehicle evaded pursuing police despite several attempts to try to stop it.
The minivan crashed a short time later on Paul Martin Drive, rolling over while rounding a curve and landing in a parking lot.
The girl was taken by air ambulance to the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario. The father was treated in hospital in Pembroke.
The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates police officers when they have been involved in incidents where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
