Mayor Jim Watson has recognized five local entrepreneurs for their significant contributions to the Ottawa economy. He presented four of them with Immigrant Entrepreneur Awards this morning at TiE Ottawa’s annual entrepreneurship conference, TiECon Canada.

The Immigrant Entrepreneur Awards, now in its sixth year, recognizes the success and contributions of individuals who were born outside of Canada and now make Ottawa their home. The awards have been presented annually since 2012.

TiE Ottawa is the local chapter of TiE, the largest network of entrepreneurs and professionals in the world, and is dedicated to fostering entrepreneurship. TiECon Canada is TiE's flagship conference that attracts businesses from Ottawa and North America – including many global and U.S. high-tech firms from Silicon Valley. TiE Ottawa has been fostering entrepreneurship in the National Capital Region for 15 years by supporting budding entrepreneurs through mentorship, networking, education and global connectivity.

The 2017 Immigrant Entrepreneur Award winners are:

  • Sadaf Ebrahim, Capital Events Ottawa
  • Andrew Ralph, Signal 88 Security
  • David José Seba, Quelque Chose Patisserie
  • Riven Zhang, Motion Pay Technology Inc.
  • Javed Chowdhury, Quality Meat and Foods Ltd. (not in attendance, award to be presented at a later date)

Quote

“Immigrant entrepreneurs are making important contributions to our regional economy and community. They add value to our city in many unique ways, from the development of innovative technologies to the creation of new jobs and domestic and global partnerships that strengthen our local economy.

This year’s award winners are unique and successful business people, but they are also representative of other newcomers to our community who are working hard to succeed and make a difference. I congratulate them on their success and thank them for their contributions.”

Mayor Jim Watson, City of Ottawa
