Throughout the Ottawa Valley, and especially in Renfrew, the numbers 88 and 65 hold special meaning.
Along with the initials AP and BH, Nos. 88 and 65 have been painted onto the ice at the Ma-Te-Way arena in Renfrew to honour Alex Paquette and Brandon Hanniman, two Renfrew Timberwolves players who died from injuries suffered in a late-night car crash Oct. 27. Friends and family are also honouring the two 18-year-olds in random gestures.
One of those tributes came from Paquette’s young cousin, Jack “Packer” Paquette, who has a bright blue 88 sticker on the back of his hockey helmet.
Alex’s aunt, Shannon Paquette, posted a message on Facebook on behalf of the grieving family.
“I just want to reach out and say thank you,” Shannon said. “It’s been tough since last Friday but not near as tough as others have it right now, especially our family — Dan (Alex’s father), Joanna (Alex’s mother) and our niece and nephew Jordyn, Nych and Danika (Alex’s siblings).
“Things you never expect or want to believe. The call I didn’t want to answer . . . my heart sits heavy. Because it’s not going to be easy today, tomorrow or in the days to come.
“I think of Alex’s friend Brandon and all their friends. We’ve met some great guys the past week. Alex had a great group.
“I know our nephew on our other side, Wade Brennan, has a heavy heart.
“Support and love will make each day a bit better. Alex, we love you. You’ll be forever with us.”
The message is punctuated with images of a heart, a hockey stick and a puck.
