Peter Adamakos, Ottawa’s animated animator, finally realized that, as much as he loved his lifetime collection of animation memorabilia, it was time to let someone in on the fun.
So he and his supporters set up the “Animation Celebration” at Algonquin College Saturday and Sunday to part with thousands of items, from vintage animation products to collectable posters, records, comic books and toys, some of which date back about 100 years.
Adamakos’ collection includes model sheets of Mickey Mouse from Steamboat Willie, Mickey’s first cartoon appearance and Donald Duck from 1938, as well as original art of Tom and Jerry, the Pink Panther and others.
“It’s time to sell it. It’s time to share it. We’ve always wanted to share it,” said Adamakos.
Adamakos, 71, and dozens of volunteers spent the last two years labeling and writing descriptions of every piece.
The Hunt Club resident was bitten by the animation bug in grade school, and later start his award-winning Disada production company.
“I’ve never wanted to do anything else,” he said.
Part of the proceeds from the Animation Celebration will go towards three charities, with the main beneficiary being the Kidney Foundation of Canada.
Fire Prevention Canada will also receive a share while the third recipient will be decided by popular vote by event attendees from up to a dozen or so allowed to register for voting.
The celebration continues Sunday at Algonquin College’s T- Building, room T-120 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
