Mayor Jim Watson and Rideau–Vanier Councillor Mathieu Fleury celebrated the official opening of the York Street Plaza today, a new public space in the ByWard Market. The plaza is the new home of the iconic OTTAWA sign and a gathering place for visitors to the area.

The plaza is located at the west end of York Street, near Sussex Drive, and includes the OTTAWA sign that visitors to the Market enjoyed over the summer. The decision to keep the OTTAWA sign in the market and move it to this space as a legacy of Ottawa 2017 festivities came as a result of feedback from the local business community and the ByWard Market Business Improvement Area.

The plaza is a flexible space that can accommodate small-scale events, thanks to moveable seating and a power supply. It also includes two new pedestrian crossings across York Street with a wayfinding corridor in between to safely link the two National Capital Commission courtyards (Jeanne d’Arc Court and Clarendon Lane).

As a pilot project, the York Street Plaza will be a temporary public space that will evolve in response to community feedback. The City is seeking partnerships with community and business stakeholders for programming to animate the plaza and create a welcoming place for residents and tourists to enjoy. If you have ideas for the plaza or wish to use the space for programming, please contact yorkstreet@ottawa.ca.

The City will create a master plan for public space within the entire ByWard Market area in 2018. This master plan will recommend improvements to traffic circulation, parking, business loading and the use of public space. The City will engage a wide range of community and business stakeholders to help develop a compelling vision for the ByWard Market.

Quotes

“The ByWard Market is one of the city’s great destinations for both tourists and residents, to which the York Street Plaza will be a vibrant and engaging addition. I’m delighted that we were able to respond to the feedback of local business owners to ensure that the iconic OTTAWA sign remains a star attraction of the Market.”

Mayor Jim Watson, City of Ottawa

“This plaza is a great contribution to our city’s gem – the ByWard Market. Residents and businesses will benefit from a welcoming gathering space right in the heart of the Market, and we have flexibility to collaborate with community partners to bring in compelling artwork and pop-up events in the future.”

Councillor Mathieu Fleury, Rideau–Vanier

“We’re proud that more than 340,000 people visited Inspiration Village this summer and that the concept of a public plaza in the area is being embraced as a legacy project of the Ottawa 2017 celebrations.”
