Environment Canada has issued a weather advisory for the Ottawa area. Snowfall and rapidly falling temperatures could affect road conditions this evening, followed by strong winds that could put hydro crews to the test.

A cold front will track over southern Ontario later Thursday night. “As this front passes, temperatures will drop and scattered rain showers will change to flurries in the evening. Temperatures will continue to drop well below freezing overnight. As a result, untreated surfaces could become icy and slippery,” said Environment Canada, which also warned of reduced visibility due to blowing snow and the possibility that tree damage could affect power lines.

West to southwesterly wind gusts of up to 70 km/h are also possible in some regions. Snow flurries are expected to end around midnight with a 30 per cent chance of flurries overnight and a low of -11 C. Friday will be mainly cloudy with a 30 per cent chance of flurries in the morning and northwest winds gusting up to 50 km/h and a high of -8.

Remembrance Day Saturday will be sunny with a high of -3.

Meanwhile, residents of much of southern Ontario have been warned about the possibility of snow squalls. Residents of Barrie, Orillia and Midland can expect 15 cm of snow by Friday morning.
