Firefighters on both sides of the river were hopping early Friday with a house fire in Ottawa’s Wellington West neighbourhood and a blaze in a commercial building that houses a local radio station in Gatineau.

Ottawa firefighters were called to 14 Gould St. just after midnight when a 911 caller reported spotting smoke and flames.

Given high winds, extra resources were immediately dispatched, and the first on the scene declared a working fire and began an “aggressive” attack.

The occupants had been able to escape safely and no one was hurt.

In Gatineau, firefighters were called to a commercial building with four tenants, including a Gatineau radio station, at 215 Saint Joseph Blvd. at 4:15 a.m. by a passerby.

The fire had begun in a stairwell. One person was taken from the building.

A total of 17 firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze then ventilated the smoke so occupants could get back inside.

The investigation of the cause of the fire has been handed over to police.
